Trapped ion qubits are one of the most mature and advanced technologies for quantum information processing. But can they hold their ground as a larger-scale, practically useful quantum computer? In this talk, I will introduce the basic methods we use to manipulate ionic qubits. I will review the platform’s state-of-the-art capabilities, and showcase our recent work on performing multi-qubit logic gates with integrated optics. Finally, I will discuss the outstanding challenges and the paths forward into the NISQ era and beyond.
