General Information

Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CFT PAN, or CTP PAS) was established on May 1, 1980, at the initiative of Prof. Iwo Białynicki-Birula, who later served as its long-time director. Since 2011, we have been operating as a fully independent scientific institute of the PAS.

CTP PAS conducts research in various fields of physics, including quantum information, space and gravity studies, semiconductors, and atomic gases. We present our research on our YouTube channel, which we warmly encourage you to visit.

The institute’s strategy is to hire the strongest researchers and give them the freedom to pursue their work. As a result, CTP PAS holds a leading position in Poland, publishes at a world-class level (including papers in Nature and Science), secures a large number of grants (currently ca. 35 projects), and participates in international consortia.

We are carrying out approximately 35 European and national research grants. Among them are prestigious European grants such as ERC Synergy, innovation development projects under EIC Pathfinder, consortium grants for the creation of new technologies (HE Cluster 4), and EuroHPC. CTP PAS participates in the QuantEra program, also serving as a consortium coordinator. We also coordinate an ERA Chair project aimed at establishing an international research group and modernizing the institute. In Poland, CTP PAS regularly receives funding from the National Science Centre, including prestigious projects such as Maestro and Grieg, as well as funding from the Foundation for Polish Science (completed Team-Net grant) and the National Agency for Academic Exchange.

The education of new scientists is an important objective of CTP PAS. For a number of years it was based on involvement in research and extramural preparation for doctoral dissertation, currently as part of Warsaw-4-PhD and Geoplanet doctoral schools. This way, CTP PAS helped over 70 scientists obtain their doctorates, among whom ca. a dozen later held professorship.

Center for Theoretical Physics plays an important role in the popularisation of science - late Łukasz Turski was the founder of the Radio BIS Science Picnic and one of the prime movers in the creation of the Copernicus Science Centre, while the long-term Director of CTP PAS, Lech Mankiewicz, initiated the Polish version of the Khan Academy.
