About us

The Center for Theoretical Physics PAS (CFT PAN) is a research institute conducting studies in various fields of physics, including quantum information, space and gravity, semiconductors, and atomic gases. The institute employs top scientists and provides freedom in research, leading to high standing, world-class publications (Nature, Science), ~30 grants, and participation in international consortia.

CFT PAN also organizes scientific events such as seminars, workshops, and conferences, and produces educational materials available on its YouTube channel.

About the role

We are seeking a leader for the Quantum Algorithms and Machine Learning Research Group in the newly established Center for Quantum-Enabled Computing (C4QEC), operating under CFT PAN.

  • Quantum algorithms theory: studying provable quantum advantage in combinatorial optimization and quantum simulation tasks,
  • Quantum algorithms implementation: simulating quantum systems on realistic hardware,
  • Quantum architectures & compilation: optimizing circuits, co-compilation, resource minimization including error correction,
  • Generative models: exploring quantum advantage in generative machine learning, especially hybrid classical-quantum approaches,
  • Learning Hamiltonians & Lindbladians: designing scalable neural networks for reconstructing open quantum system dynamics from experimental and simulated data,
  • Interpretable neural networks for physics: developing interpretable deep learning models to identify matter phases and express order parameters symbolically from spin correlators.

Main responsibilities

  • Co-develop research agenda and lead own group, ensuring milestones are met in collaboration with other group leaders,
  • Conduct world-class research in quantum computation, quantum algorithms, or machine learning,
  • Publish in top scientific journals and present results at conferences,
  • Apply for national and international funding (NCN, ERC, etc.).

About you

  • PhD in physics or related field relevant to the research agenda, obtained before application deadline,
  • Fluent in English; Polish is an asset,
  • Significant scientific record in quantum computing, quantum information, or related fields, with publications and invited talks,
  • Experience in leading research teams or demonstrated leadership potential,
  • Experience as PI or Co-Investigator in research projects is an asset,
  • Openness to internal and international collaboration,
  • Experience in commercialization and industry collaboration is an asset,
  • Experience supervising students and PhD candidates is a plus.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary: PLN 20,750–24,250 gross/month (approx. PLN 16,300–18,500 net/month), including length-of-service allowance; possible bonuses according to CFT PAN regulations,
  • Independent research group leadership,
  • Support for Open Access publications,
  • Resources for applied research (TRL > 1) in quantum computation or machine learning,
  • Patent application support,
  • Funding for 3 additional researchers (1 postdoc, 2 PhD students) and several students,
  • Funding for conference participation, visiting researchers, and collaborations,
  • Office space, career development, and access to CFT PAN computing resources.

How to apply

Applications should be sent to: recruitment@cft.edu.pl, by 17 May 2026, with the reference number “MAB/06/2026” in the subject line.

  • CV (max 10 pages),
  • Scientific record including publications, projects (highlight PI roles), invited talks, supervision, and other academic activities,
  • Motivation letter (max 2 pages) including possible start date, past achievements, and planned research,
  • Initial research plan for the group (max 3 pages), detailing innovative potential and industry collaboration prospects,
  • At least 2 letters of recommendation (preferably 3), sent directly by independent researchers,
  • Copy of PhD diploma (and habilitation if applicable),
  • Signed Data Privacy Statement (GDPR clause).

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

How we recruit

We carefully review every application. Candidates whose experience and competencies match our needs are invited for an interview (usually online). We maintain contact throughout, ensuring interviews are friendly and accessible. Feedback is given after interviews.
