April 8

Agnieszka Janiuk presented seminar talk in the virtual colloquium of Copernicus Astronomical Center. The title of the seminar was “Accretion onto black hole modeled via relativistic MHD simulations”.

The 11-th Consortium Meeting of the X-IFU instrument has been held virtually on the ZOOM platflorm. Event was devoted to presenting the current status of the satellite under construction. Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the XSAT team activities and plenary discussions.

March 23-26

The conference on “Supercomputing Frontiers Europe 2020″ has been held in Warsaw, Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical Modeling. Due to the COVID-19 spread, the event was fully virtual. Bestin James and Agnieszka Janiuk from CTP PAS presented a short talk (based on their poster contribution) about “Numerical tests of HARM simulations”.

Agnieszka Janiuk gave a popular lecture about “Dancing black holes”. The talk was presented in the Auditorium of Copernicus Astronomical Center PAS, in Warsaw.

February 7

The new episode of the TV series “Astronarium” has been broadcasted in the public channel. The theme of this episode was “cosmic telescope Athena”. Agnieszka Janiuk from CTP PAS and Agata Różańska from CSMK PAS spoke there about the science driven by the=is newly constructed telescope. The launch of Athena is planned in the early 2030′s.,

Our source code for GR MHD simulations of gamma ray bursts, HARM-COOL, has been publicly released on the CTP Astro website, and also indexed in the IAU B1 Commission repo.

2019

December 16

We submitted two proposals for new funding of our reserach group. Ms Ishika Palit submitted the Preludium grant proposal for continuing her PhD thesis research. We also sent the Opus grant proposal, in which we ask for the funding of new post-doctoral position in our group.

This week dr Kostas Sapountzis from the University of Athens came to visit our group at CTP PAS. We performed several tests of numerical simulations of the magnetically arrested accretion onto black hole.

Agnieszka Janiuk presented seminar entitled “Magnetohydrodynamical simulations of black hole accretion torus”. The talk was given in the Physics Faculty of the Jagiellonian University, Department of General Relativity and Astrophysics

Ishika Palit presented a talk entitled “Shocks in low angular momentum accretion flow” on the PhD students Seminar in the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.

Agnieszka Janiuk presented the seminar in the Theory Division of the National Center for Nuclear Research in Warsaw. The title of the talk was “Modeling short gamma ray bursts from binary neutron star mergers with general relativistic magnetohydrodybamics”

We participated in the RAGtime MHD Workshop, organized in Opava Silesian University. Ishika Palit presented a talk on “Mass and spin constraint on black holes associated with long GRB’s in Collapsar model”, and Agnieszka Janiuk presented the talk about “Modeling short gamma ray bursts from binary neutron star mergers with general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics”. Also, Martin Kolos reported about some results obtained during his stay at CTP PAS, in the talk entitled “Black hole magnetosphere and accretion tori”.

We hosted the scientific visit of dr Petra Sukova, from the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Dr Sukova is a specialist in relativistic astrophysics, and her visit was devoted to the discussion of Kerr metric evolution during the process of black hole accretion.

The new member of our team has arrived. Mr Bestin James will be appointed as a PhD student under the new Doctoral School Geoplanet. He will work with prof. Janiuk on the topic of magnetized accretion flows onto black holes.

September 23-26

In Szczecin, at the Maritime Academy, the Polish Society on Relativity PoToR held its 6th meeting. We participated in the astrophysics session. Agnieszka Janiuk presented a plenary talk on “Magnetized outflows from accreting black holes after neutron star merger”. Ishika Palit presented a talk in the parallel session, entitled “Accretion in a dynamical spacetime and the spinning up of the black hole in collapsars”.

September 15-21

We participated in the supercomputing conference held in Skt. Petersburg, by the Commission B1 of the International Astronomical Union. The workshop was devoted to “Challenges and Innovations in Computational Astrophysics”. Agnieszka Janiuk presented an invited talk there, entitled “Modeling of black hole accretion flows with GR MHD”.

We participated in the Polish Astronomical Society meeting, which was held in Olsztyn. Ishika Palit presented a poster on the “Mass and spin constraint on black holes associated with long GRBs in the Collapsar model”. Dominika Król presented poster entitled “Evolution of the black hole mass and spin in collapsars for rotating and magnetized pre-supernovae”.

July 7-13

We attended the “22nd International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation 13th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves”. The symposium was organized in Valencia, Spain. Agnieszka Janiuk presented there a talk in Session on “Relativistic Astrophysics”, entitled “Accretion in a dynamical Kerr Spacetime and spinning up the black hole in collapsar”. Also, Agnieszka Janiuk gave a talk in the “Multimessenger astrophysics” session, entitled “Short Gamma Ray Bursts, Jets and Kilonovae”.

July 1

A new internship student, Ms. Dominika Król, started work at Center for Theoretical Physics. Her 3-months practice will be devoted to studies of star’ collapse and formation of rotating black hole, for various models of stellar progenitors.

June 3-8

We participated in the XIIIth Frascati Workshop on Multifrequency Behaviour of High Energy Cosmic Sources. The meeting was organized in Palermo, by prof. Franco Giovanelli from the University of Roma. Agnieszka Janiuk presented there an invited talk on „GLADIS: Global Accretion Disk Instability Simulation code”, and also the contribution talk on the modeling of GRB central engines and jets, in the talk on the „Multimessenger Signals from Short Gamma ray Bursts”.

The Institute of Physics, PAS, organized the annual Symposium for the PhD students of International PhD studies. Meeting was held in Serock, near the Zegrzynskie lake. The presentation of Ishika Palit was given about “Low angular momentum accretion around black hole”.

The conference on “Astroparticle Physics in Poland” was held in Warsaw, and organized by the National Board for Astroparticle Physics, i.e. KRAC. Agnieszka Janiuk presented there an invited talk on “Theory of Gamma Ray Bursts”. Ishika Palit presented a poster about “Low angular momentum accretion flows around black holes”.

At N. Copernicus Astronomical Center in Warsaw we held the first meeting of the Science Board for the Doctoral School Geoplanet. The School is supported by seven institutions of the Polish Academy of Sciences, including CTP PAS.

April 14-18

The consortium meeting was held in Grenoble, France, to collect the representative members of the European countries, and USA and Japan, who participate in the building of the X-IFU detector onboard the X-ray mission Athena. Agnieszka Janiuk was representing Poland in the Science Advisory Team.

Agnieszka Janiuk presented the seminar talk in the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The talk title was “Simulations of short GRB central engines and their jets launching”.

Agnieszka Janiuk gave a talk entitled “Astrophysics of processes around compact objects” that summarized the main results of our 5-year research program on this topic, financed through the grant Sonata-Bis. The talk was held in The Faculty of Physics at the Jagiellonian University.

Ms Ishika Palit opened her PhD thesis project at Center for Theoretical Physics. Upon decision of the CTP PAS Science Council, the approved thesis title will be “Aspects of low angular momentum accretion flows onto black hole”. The thesis advisor is prof. Agnieszka Janiuk.

We held at CFT the visit of prof. Vladimir Karas from Prague Astronomical Institute. His visit was devoted to the discussion of the effects of expulsion of the black hole magnetosphere in the Kerr metric.

We held a visit of dr Kostas Sapountzis at CFT. His project was devoted to the development of the code for numerical simulations of magnetically arrested disks and astrophysical jets.

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the XXXth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, held in Vienna, Austria. She presented a poster on „Variability of magnetically-dominated jets in blazars and gamma ray bursts”, on the special Focus Meeting on the role of magnetic fields in the Universe.

We hosted at CFT Ms Ariadna Murguia-Berthier from University of California, Santa Cruz, USA. Her visit was devoted to the project on the numerical simulations of stellar collapse, black hole formation, and accretion feedback.

We hosted at CFT dr. Monika Mościbrodzka from Radboud University in the Netherlands. Her visit was devoted to the presentation of the new code “iPole” for the studies of polarized emission from astrophysical jets, which she developed.

Kostas Sapountzis was on the working visit in the Astronomical Institute in Prague. He continued his collaboration with prof. Vladimir Karas on the phenomenon of the magnetic expulsion from the black hole ergosphere.

Our group participated in the conference POLNS. The meeting was organized in the Copernicus Astronomical Center to gather scientists working in Poland on all aspects of neutron stars, such as multi-messanger astronomy, physics of dense matter, and relativistic nuclear astrophysics. Kostas Sapountzis presented a talk on the “MRI implication on the short GRB jets”. Also, student Katarzyna Wojczuk presented a poster about “Nucleosynthesis in the plasma accreting onto a black hole at the basis of the jet in Gamma Ray Bursts”.

Mikołaj Grzędzielski has been awarded the PhD degree in physics, based on his dissertation ” Models of accretion disks thermal oscillations in applications to systems with black holes”. The PhD advisor was prof. Agnieszka Janiuk. The degree is given by the Center for Theoretical Physics Scientific Council.

During the Annual Session of the Scientific Council, Agnieszka Janiuk presented the research and activity of the entire group in 2017. The talk was entitled “Black hole accretion flows”.

Kostas Sapountzis participated in the KDM-User session of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling in Warsaw. He gave there a presentation about “Integrating equations in a curved spacetime”.

Our group participated in the conference Supercomputing Frontiers in Europe, organised by Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling in Warsaw. Agnieszka Janiuk gave there a talk about “Numerical simulations of the black hole accretion flows”. Jeremy Mortier and Ishika Palit presented their posters about the supercomupter simulations on the Okeanos machine.

Mikołaj Grzędzielski presented a seminar talk in the National Center for Nuclear Research in Warsaw. The topic of his talk was the “Modified viscosity in accretion disks” and the presentation included the main results in his PhD thesis.

Two new PhD students won the competition and joined our research team. Apart from the employment in the Center for Theoretical Physics, Ishika Palit and Jeremy Mortier joined the International PhD Studies at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

New student on the internship with our group is Mr. Marcin Wrona, who is now at 5th year of astronomy at the University of Warsaw. His project is related to the kinematical modeling of jets in gamma ray bursts.

During the science festival, we prepepared our annual Astronomy Workshop for children. The workshop this year was led by Szymon Charzyński.

September 11-14

The 38. Bi-Annual Meeting of the Polish Astronomical Society was held in Zielona Góra. Mikołaj Grzędzielski presented there a talk on the “Modified viscosity in accretion disks”, and Katarzyna Wojczuk presented her research results on the poster entitled “Nucleosynthesis in the plasma accreting onto a black hole at the basis of the jet in Gamma Ray Bursts”.

In Warsaw, Staszic Palace, a worskhop devoted to the X-ray spectroscopy was held. This international meeting was organized under the AHEAD (Activities in High Energy Astrophysics) programme. Agnieszka Janiuk presented there a talk about the black hole accretion disks instabilities.

July 10- August 18

In Copenhagen the Kavli Foundation and Niels Bohr Institute held the Kavli Summer Program for Astrophysics, entitled “Astrophysics with gravitational wave detections”. Agnieszka Janiuk participated there as a senior scientist, to supervise the project on “Low angular momentum accretion leading to the LIGO black hole assembly”, taken by the PhD student from UCSC, Ms. Ariadna Murguia-Berthier. The co-supervision of this project was taken also in part by Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz (UCSC) and Ilya Mandel (U. Birmingham).

The two students conducting the summer internship at our institute are Paulina Michalak (2nd year of Physics, Warsaw Univ.), and Maciej Ossowski (3rd year of Astronomy, Warsaw Univ.). The topics of their projects are related to the black hole accretion in microquasars, and gamma ray bursts.

In Prague, the European Week of Astronomy and Space Sciences (EWASS 2017) was held. One of the Symposia, S10, entitled “Properties and evolution of accreting compact objects in low and high mass X-ray binaries”, was co-organized by Enrico Bozzo, Agnieszka Janiuk, and Andrea Sanna. Also, from our group three posters were shown (K. Sapountzis, M. Grzędzielski, and P. Sukova), which were postered on Symposia  S10, S11, and S12. Agnieszka Janiuk gave a talk at Symposium S11, on the Gamma-Ray bursts.

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the XII Frascati Workshop on the “Multifrequency behaviour of High Energy Cosmic sources”, held in Palermo, Italy. She presented there an invited talk about “Microphysics in gamma ray bursts central engines”.

The undergraduate student appointed for a scientific internship in our group is Ms Katarzyna Wojczuk (4th year of physics, Warsaw University). Her project is related to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in GRB central engines.

April 19-21

In Warsaw, in the building of the Warsaw University Library (BUW) the Interdisciplinary Center of Mathematical Modeling organized their XIX users session. We presented there a poster showing the preliminary results of shocks simulations (S. Charzyński) and a talk about the theory and modelling of accretion in the gamma ray bursts engines (A. Janiuk).

At the academic meeting “Girls into science” which was hosted at the Copernicus University in Torun,  prof.  Agnieszka Janiuk met with the candidates interested in studying physics and astronomy. She also presented a lecture on “Black Hole accretion in gamma ray bursts and other sources”, which was invited to the weekly Thursday Colloquium at the Physics Faculty.

In Warsaw we had the annual CompStar conference, wchich was devoted to all aspects of compact stars and related fields, such as physics of dense matter, relativistic nuclear astrophysics, pulsars and binary neutron stars, gravitational waves, and multimessenger astronomy. Agnieszka Janiuk presented there a poster which summarized the new ApJ article “Microphysics in gamma ray bursts central engines”.

 

March 21-23

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the 5th Consortium Meeting of X-IFU, which is an instrument built for the Athena X-ray mission. The meeting took place in Toulouse and was hosted by The Research Institute in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP). The topic of our presentation given at the plenary session was electronics and design of the Power Distribution Unit as well as the door to open the Dewar Unit onboard X-IFU. The technology is developed by the engineers from the Space Research Center of PAS in Warsaw.

Mikołaj Grzędzielski has formally opened his PhD track at Center for Theoretical Physics. The subject of his thesis will be “Modeling of thermal oscillations in black hole accretion disks”, and the work will be wrtitten under supervision of prof. Agnieszka Janiuk.

Also, during the Annual Session of the Scientific Council, Szymon Charzyński presented his research on the polarisation of gravitational waves.

We hired a new team member, dr Konstantinos Sapountzis. He will work as postdoctoral researcher, on the topic of jets in gamma ray bursts and accretion disks numerical simulations.

Mikołaj Grzędzielski took part in the conference “ExTraS Workshop”. The conference was dedicated to the X-ray sources observations. Conference was held in Pavia in Lombardy (Italy), close to Milan.

Petra Sukova came to CFT for a short-term scientific visit. She gave a seminar on the “Variability of accreting black holes”, which summarized her 3-years of research as a post-doc in our team.

Agnieszka Janiuk received a team award of III rank, given for the research achievements in the year 2015, and awarded by the Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun. The prize honored collaboration with the team of dr Magdalena Kunert-Bajraszewska.

The IX international conference on teaching astronomy was held in Niepołomice, at the Youth Astronomical Observatory. Szymon Charzyński gave a talk there about gravitational wave astronomy.

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the „6th Kathmandu Conference on Black Holes. Shining from the heart of darkness: black hole accretion and jets”. The meeting was held in Nepal and was co-organized by the Tribhuvan University, Polish Academy of Sciences N. Copernicus Astronomical Center, and Italian INAF.

Agnieszka Janiuk and Petra Sukova participated in the 324 Symposium of the International Astronomical Union, entitled “New frontiers in black hole astrophysics” and held in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Petra Sukova participated in the summer school on “Prospects in Theoretical Physics – Computational Plasma Astrophysics”, organised by the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton.

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the European Week of Astronomy and Space Sciences in Athens, Greece. She presented the results of her work on the gamma-ray bursts central engine modeling, and putative connection of a GRB event with the gravitational wave source GW150914, discovered by LIGO. She also presented a poster prepared by Petra Sukova, concerning her simulations of weakly rotating accretion flows in galaxy centers.

Szymon Charzyński presented our research on the merging black holes and black hole accretion simulations at the science session in the Technology Center of the Warsaw University Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical Modeling. For our computations, we are using now the new CrayXC40 machine, with more than a thousand nodes, which is located at this Center.

We announced a new competition for the post-doctoral position in our group. A new person can be hired already from October this year. Petra Sukova, who will be leaving our group, is planning to move back to Prague, Czech Rep., and work in the Astronomical Institute. The Polish-Czech collaboration will be continued via the exchange visits programme.

Agnieszka Janiuk, who is a member of the the Science Advisory Team, participated in the 3rd X-IFU Consortium meeting, which was held at SRON in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the design of the X-ray Integral Field Unit, which will be onboard the Athena Satellite.

Petra Sukova presented our method of finding non-linear dynamics in microquasars with the talk “Searching for traces of non-linear dynamics in light curves of X-ray binaries” at the meeting of the Science committee of our Institute.

Agnieszka Janiuk presented our work at the seminar of the Astronomical Observatory of the Warsaw University. In her talk on “Chaotic microquasars” she combined the results on radiation-pressure induced instability with our finding about non-linear behaviour of microquasars based on the variability of their lightcurves.

Szymon Charzyński gave a seminar about binary binary black holes and gravitational waves in the Opitics Seminar at the Physics Faculty of Warsaw Univeristy. He also highlighted our work about the tentative coincidence between gravitational wave and electromagnetic signal in gamma rays.

Agnieszka Janiuk was invited for a guest visit to the  Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Charles University in Prague. She gave a seminar about the “Gamma Ray Bursts as the Death Throes of massive stars”. Also, she gave an informal talk about the “Astronomy of Shakespeare”.

On September 19-27, in Warsaw we had the annual Science Festival. Center for Theoretical Physics organized an Open Day with lectures and workshops. Our group (Agnieszka Janiuk and Mikołaj Grzędzielski) organized and held the Astronomy Workshop for children.

Sep, 21-24

Agnieszka Janiuk participated at the PhD defense of Mgr. Jaroslav Hamerský from the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences as the referee of his thesis. Afterwards she gave seminar about our research at ASU AV ČR.

Sep, 7-10

Agnieszka Janiuk and Mikołaj Grzędzielski took part in the 37th, bi-annual meeting of the Polish Astronomical Society, which was held in Poznań. They also presented the poster of Agnieszka Janiuk, Petra Suková and Szymon Charzynski about Relativistic low angular momentum accretion and its numerical simulations in 1D, 2D and 3D.

New person who joined our group is mr Wojciech Kowalski, student of the Warsaw University, Physics Dept. He will study the variability and energy spectra of accreting black holes.

Aug, 24-28

We held the 1st Roman Juszkiewicz Symposium in Warsaw, an international meeting devoted to the modern cosmology and astrophysics. From our group, participants of the meeting were Agnieszka Janiuk (also a member of the Local Organizing Committee) and Mikołaj Grzędzielski.

Aug, 17-21

Agnieszka Janiuk participated in the Workshop on Microphysics In Computational Relativistic Astrophysic, MICRA, which was organized by the Department of Astronomy of the Stockholm University.

Aug, 11-14

Agnieszka Janiuk, Szymon Charzynski and Petra Suková presented our work and took part in the discussion session of the Einstein Toolkit Workshop, organized by the developers and users of the code and held in Nordic Center for Theoretical Physics, in Stockholm.

Jun, 15-19

Mikołaj Grzędzielski participated in the “10th Serbian Conference on Spectral Line Shapes in Astrophysics”, organized by the Astronomical Observatory Belgrade. The conference was held in Srebrno Jezero in Serbia.

May, 25-27

We presented our work and took part in the discussion session of the Interdisciplinary Center for Computer Modelling of the Warsaw University, held in Jachranka.

May, 11-13

We presented our group and current research on the conference “Astroparticle Physics in Poland”, organized by the National Council of Astroparticle Physics and held in the Warsaw University, at the new Campus Ochota.

March, 12

We submitted our research proposal to the European Research Commission call for “Co-grants” (Consolidator grant) . The topic is Astrophysical Black Holes.

March, 4

New person who joined our group is dr Szymon Charzynski. He will be working on numerical simulations of relativistic accretion flows.

2014

 

December, 8-12

Petra Suková was invited to participate at the conference Meeting with Copernicus & Hevelius: confrontations with relativistic astrophysics, which was held in Krakow. She gave a talk on hysteresis-like behaviour of the shock front in low angular momentum flows.

Petra Suková gave a seminar talk in Copernicus Astronomical Center in Warsaw. The topic was our recent work on the low angular momentum flow and its possible application to different sources. Her presentation can be found on the page “Publications”.

Mikołaj Grzędzielski gave a seminar talk in Copernicus Asytronomical Center in Warsaw. The topic was our recent work on the microquasar IGR J17091, its luminosity oscillations and wind ejected from the accretion disk. His presentation, and article text, can be found on the page “Publications”.

The VII conference devoted to teaching astronomy in XXI century was organized on 17-19 October, in Niepołomice. Agnieszka Janiuk presented a lecture on X-ray astrophysics and its research methods used to study microquasars. The conference programme (in Polish) is here.

Petra Sukova was invited to participate in the workshop “RAGtime 16” held in Prague, which scientific scope was devoted to current problems of relativistic astrophysics mainly focused on the physics of black holes and neutron stars. She gave a talk on the oscillating shocks in accreting black hole systems.

Petra Sukova and Mikołaj Grzędzielski participated in the astrophysical school on “The Many faces of Compact Stars”. It was organized by the COST Action NewCompStar in Barcelona.

Petra Suková participated in the conference “The Spanish Relativity Meeting ERE 2014”, organized by the Spanish Society of Gravitation and Relativity (SEGRE) and hosted by the University of Valencia. She presented the talk “Shocks in the low angular momentum accretion flows”.

Prof. Agnieszka Janiuk and Dr. Petra Sukova attended the conference The Galactic Center Black Hole Laboratory in Granada, Spain. Prof. Agnieszka Janiuk gave a talk “Modeling black hole mergers in long gamma ray bursts”. Dr. Petra Sukova gave a talk “Chaos in geodesic flow in black-hole-disc system: computation of FLI and MEGNO”.

Mgr. Mikołaj Grzędzielski gave a talk at the seminar of Centre for Theoretical Physics with the title “Properties of solutions of the linearized Boltzmann equation for fermions”.

Dr. Petra Sukova gave a talk at the seminar of Centre for Theoretical Physics with the title “Chaotic motion around black holes with disc/ring”.

 

October, 1

 Two new people joined the astrophysics group. Mr Mikołaj Grzędzielski, MSc, started his job as a research assistant. He will be working on the physics of X-ray emitting compact binary systems. Mrs Petra Sukova, PhD, arrived from Prague in Czech Republic and began her work as a post-doc. She will be working on the theory of accretion processes in the black hole environment.

 

September, 1

Two undergraduate students of fourth year in Technical University – Mr Michał Łepek and Mr Bartłomiej Gajdzis are working on their summer internship. The analysis of observations of binary systems with black holes is topic of their work.

 

July, 1

 Mr Bartłomiej Kamiński, MSc, started his contract as the research assistant. He will be working with numerical modeling of accretion flows.

 

May, 6

 The completion for PhD candidate (research assistant) is closed. CFT attracted four applications from Warsaw and Poznan.

 

April, 2

 The competition for post-doc (adjunct)  position is closed. CFT attracted 10 applications from many countries around the world.

 

February, 25

 The grant agreement with the National Center of Science for financing research is signed.

 

January, 18

 We announced competitions for the positions of post-doc and PhD in astrophysics financed under the project.

 

2012

 

December, 18

Due to the president’s of National Center of Science decision, Center for Theoretical Physics PAN received 1,482,000 zł for financing the project “Astrophysics of the processes around compact cosmic objects”, under the supervision of dr hab Agnieszka Janiuk. The project is granted for years 2013-2018
