Article about kilonova accepted to Astrophysical Journal

The article about kilonova has been accepted to the Astrophysical Journal. We discuss here the possibility of synthesis of heavy nuclei, up to Thorium and Uranium, in the r-process that takes place in the unbound outflows from accretion disk in a short GRB engine. Such outflows are rich in radioactive heavy nuclei, and manifest themselves as the kilonova emission. Such event has been detected after the gamma ray burst coincident with GW 170817, which was the gravitational wave source emitting due to the coalescence of binary neutron stars.

GR22-Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves

On July 7-13, in Valencia, Spain, we attended the “22nd International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation 13th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves”. Several hundred specialists from all world met there to discuss aspects of the gravity theory, cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, as well as numerical methods in relativity, and observational techniques of detection of gravitational wave sources and their cosmic environment. The astrophysics group at CTP PAS was represented by prof. Agnieszka Janiuk, with the presentations about Kerr metric evolution in the collapsing star, and the r-process nucleosynthesis in the outflows from binary neutron star merger remnant.
