Seminar in Wroclaw

On Decmber 18th, Mikolaj Grzedzielski gave a seminar in the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Wroclaw. His talk covered the most important results that for a content of his PhD thesis. One of them is the black hole mass determination in the Ultraluminous X-ray source, HLX-1 (see figure below).

Deciphering the Violent Universe

On December 11-15, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the conference “Deciphering the Violent Universe” took place. Over 150 scientists from all over the world discussed there the recent discoveries connected with cosmic explosions, such as the binary neutron star mergers, gamma ray bursts, super- and kilonovae, tidal disruptions, magnetars, and other. The organizers of the meeting were Fabio de Colle and Diego Lopez-Camara from the UNAM University, and the meeting was supported by the Mexican Astronomical Society.

The research of our group on the gamma ray bursts, accretion in their central engines, jets, and nucleosynthesis processes, was presented by prof. Agnieszka Janiuk in her invited talk.

The conference website with abstracts and programme is available here.

Visit in Prague

On Nov 21-Dec 1st, Ishika Palit and Agnieszka Janiuk visited the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Science in Prague. Purpose of this visit was to continue the scientific collaboration with Petra Sukova on the topic of the shocks in the relativistic accretion flows on the black holes. Also, Agnieszka Janiuk gave there a seminar about the Accretion flows in the collapsing massive stars.
